Happy: The Journal Review & GIVEAWAY

Thinking of keeping a journal? Happy: The Journal by Fearne Cotton is a 12-month, daily, write-in journal. It is partially dated with the month and number, for example January 1, January 2 etc. Each day has a thoughtful writing prompt. Each month has a theme. The spaces for writing in are lined. Some sample pages are shown below. Fearne is a passionate ambassador for Mind, an organization throughout England and Wales that promotes healthy minds. I recognize her from UK television. She is surprisingly candid about her own struggles. I've kept a journal before, mostly stream of consciousness, and like Fearne I found it cathartic and revealing. This time I'd like a little nudge. I've decided to work my way through it. The benefits of keeping a journal are many including greater awareness. Ixia Press released the 256 page paperback on December 28, 2018. Get your copy below!

KARIDERM - Shea Butter Discovery Kit REVIEW

For the past week I have been discovering the benefits of using organic shea butter on my skin. I came across a Canadian company in Laval, Quebec who have partnered with a women's cooperative of shea butter producers in Burkina Faso, West Africa. Founded in 1998 KARIDERM is a certified organic and fair trade producer of face, body and hair care products made with organic shea butter. I've been testing their Shea Butter Discovery Kit. It does NOT disappoint. The kit is made up of 5 shea butter skin care products including raw organic shea butter. Shea butter is extracted from the fruit of the shea tree found mainly in West Africa. It has been used for centuries by women to nourish and protect skin and hair. To learn more about shea butter and it's benefits, including origins, properties and usage please visit KARIDERM.

Shea Butter Discovery Kit

Raw Organic Shea Butter
Hand Cream
Organic Lip Balm
Neutral Natural Soap + Argan + Vitamin E
Moisturizing Protective Face Cream Samples x 2

CAD $ 23.95
USD $ 18.75

Kariderm's Organic Shea Butter has a light natural scent. It can be used on skin and hair and has many uses as a beauty supply or in the medicine cabinet for skin irritations.

Kariderm's superior protection Hand Cream has a nice subtle natural scent likely because of lavender and fennel oils. It goes on smoothly and is absorbed well. It feel's light and not greasy. I may have to switch.

Kariderm's Organic Lip Balm smells delicious likely due to the pure extract of Bourbon vanilla and orange oil. It reminds me of the smell of opening a box of fine assorted chocolates. It leaves a nice gloss on your lips. It feels rich and luscious. It's addictive. Did you know shea butter has naturally occurring UV protection? It nourishes and protects lips year round from sun, wind and cold.

My favorite is Kariderm's Neutral Natural Soap with shea butter, argan and vitamin E. It's 100% vegan and unscented. It lathers nicely. I use it on my face and body. It cleans gently yet thoroughly without stripping the skin. I just might not be able to live without it. They also have a lavender & a citrus shea butter soap that I want to try.

Kariderm's moisturizing protective Face Cream is a star product within the Kariderm line. It is for all skin types. It has a light natural scent. It is recommended you follow a cleanse, tone and moisturize routine.

I found KARIDERM'S natural skin care products to be of high quality. What is remarkable is their efficacy. Organic shea butter is at or near the top of each products ingredient list. KARIDERM is available in Canada and the US online and in storeDelivery is free everywhere in Canada and the continental US with any purchase of $50 or more! I recommend.

CARINA ORGANICS Review

This is my CARINA ORGANICS experience. I just completed a week of using CARINA ORGANICS Sweet Pea Daily Moisturizing Shampoo along with Sweet Pea Deep Treatment Conditioner. Established in 1972 CARINA ORGANICS is a certified organic and sustainably sourced Canadian hair and skin care products company located in North Vancouver, British Columbia. Shipping Canada wide is $7.99 flat rate and shipping is free on all orders $99+ Canada & the USA. After I placed my order I received an email letting me know that my organic products were being handcrafted. As soon as they were formulated, bottled and ready for shipment I received my tracking number. My toxin free shampoo and conditioner arrived safely. I couldn't wait to use them.

Sweet Pea Daily Moisturizing Shampoo - Carina Organics
Sweet Pea Deep Treatment Conditioner - Carina Organics

To wet hair I added Sweet Pea Daily Moisturizing Shampoo. The first thing I noticed was the light natural scent. It was not overpowering. I lathered up. I wash my hair the way the salon does with the focus on gently scrubbing the scalp with the finger tips. After rinsing thoroughly I then applied the Sweet Pea Deep Treatment Conditioner with attention to the ends. After about 2 minutes I ran a wide tooth comb through my hair with ease, starting at the ends. And then I gave it a final rinse before patting lightly with a towel to remove the excess water. After allowing my hair to dry I styled as usual.

The results are my hair is incredibly soft and shiny and I was not exposed to all of the toxic chemicals found in synthetic hair products. I care that what goes down the bathroom drain isn't toxic to the environment, the ingredients are sustainably sourced, the plastic bottles are recyclable and it's made in Canada. In conclusion I prefer Carina Organics hair products because they get their cleaning power and lovely scents from ingredients found in nature plus they leave my hair feeling clean and healthy. For more information and to get your organic hair and skin care products please visit Carina Organics. I recommend.

Bruce Botanical Food Gardens

Bruce Botanical Food Gardens

These are the photos of my visit to the Bruce Botanical Food Gardens last evening. I picked 4 varieties of mint and turned them into a wreath. I used some of the mint to make a tisane for my boyfriend Graham. My recipe is very simple – pour boiling water over clean mint leaves and stems, add a little honey and steep.

Page 49 Silent Beach Chapter 3 QUIET, Project 3

A beach offers a still point where we can let go of our busy schedules, clear our minds, and tune into nature. This Degas drawing has a wonderfully peaceful feel to it. What I love about it is that Degas created such a deep vista of sand, sea, and sky simply with horizontal bands of color. I’ve played with this idea, using torn strips of paper colored with watercolor and gouache, but you could try it with pastel. Allow for some ambiguity, as getting specific or busy can change the feel of the work entirely. Let your colors remain flowing and soft.

YOU WILL NEED :

• 8″ x 10″ (20.5 x 25.5 cm) or 9″ x 12″ (23 x 30.5 cm) Bristol board or watercolor paper
• three pieces of watercolor paper, 8″ x 10″ (20.5 x 25.5 cm)
• watercolors and gouache
• paintbrushes, in a variety of sizes
• water
• matte medium

Imagine a seascape, using the Degas painting as a reference. Paint the Bristol board with a sand color. It can be an off-white or light brown, or lighter in some areas and darker in others. Allow the paint to dry completely.
silent-beach-drawing-clam-quarto-creates2

Paint the three pieces of watercolor paper, one in varying shades of blues, another with whites, and the third with soft yellow tones. Orient each of these horizontally on your workspace.
silent-beach-drawing-clam-quarto-creates3

Tear the painted sheets from step 2 into irregular horizontal strips. The paper can still be a little wet. There may be rough spots and crooked lines, which is okay. Enjoy the imperfections.
silent-beach-drawing-clam-quarto-creates4

Imagine a band of deep water at the bottom of the page, a brighter horizon line toward the middle, and a vast sky above. Overlap the pieces of torn paper on the background, brushing water over them to hold them together. Notice how you can add piece after piece to construct the three areas of color. The brightest band is in the center of the page.
silent-beach-drawing-clam-quarto-creates5

Attach the strips to the surface with matte medium. Starting at the bottom, attach the darkest section. Move up to the brightest area and then to the sky. Don’t worry if the colors aren’t coming together the way you want them quite yet. Let the matte medium dry.
silent-beach-drawing-clam-quarto-creates6

How do the bands of collaged color look? Do you have beautiful torn edges that are adding to the depth of the landscape? Add a few more torn pieces of painted paper, if you like. Now focus on how the color is lying on the page. Do you need to add anything? Does it feel hazy and beautiful, or do you want richer color? You can go back in with paint now and work on any areas that need a little something more. Start with a watery paint and let the subtle colors and torn paper textures remain important elements on the page. Enjoy the subtlety of the sea, sky, and the beautiful textures you’ve created.

Zen Origami Kit Review & Giveaway

Zen Origami: 20 Modular Forms for Meditation and Calm by Maria Sinayskaya – Paperback released April 15, 2016 from Race Point Publishing. Kit includes a 128 page book and whopping 400 sheets of origami paper. Modular origami is the technique of folding 2 or more pieces of paper identically and then assembling them into a single unit. I start with the first project a Square Coaster requiring 4 sheets of paper to make. It's a design I haven't come across before and I find it both attractive and practical. I move on to the Giant Star (8 sheets) and Two-Faced Flower (6 sheets) with striking results. Having successfully completed the 3 warm-up designs my confidence has grown and I'm ready to tackle my first Fasett Sonobe. I begin with the 6-unit cube assembly and am delighted to be able to fold it. I am enjoying this book, the instructions are very clear and the designs sound. I like the paper too. There are 400 sheets measuring 3" x 3", mostly patterns with solid color reverses, all have matte finishes. It's nice to see some new patterns. A terrific modular origami kit.  Get your copy below!
