Fabulous Modular Origami Review & GIVEAWAY

I just got Tomoko Fuse's new book Fabulous Modular Origami: 20 origami models with instructions and diagrams. In modular origami multiple pieces of paper are folded and then assembled into a single unit. The Summary below lists the books 20 folding projects. All designs have a difficulty rating of 1 through 5, easy to expert. The number of modules per unit varies. The easiest models need only 2 pieces of paper while the most difficult require as many as 30. Nearly all have a recommended paper size of either 3 or 6" squares. Instructions are via large folding diagrams, complete with symbols and text. Photos by Dario Canova show the completed models from a variety of angles. The Large star from page 118 requires 30 pieces of 4" square paper.

This is the Bright star I folded from page 52. It's an ingenious and satisfying fold! No cutting is involved. The design has a difficulty rating of 3 out of 5. Five pieces of 3" square paper are required to make it. All five units are folded identically and then assembled into a single unit. Assembly is not difficult. While glue isn't necessary, I used it to make my star more durable. It measures approximately 4 1/2" across when complete. I love it!

Square Origami Box

A square origami box with a lid. The design from Origami Boxes by Tomoko Fuse requires 8 square pieces of paper, 4 for the top and 4 for the bottom. I used 15 x 15cm rice paper with a simple red and white pattern.The finished box measures 8.5 x 8.5 with a depth of 4.5cm. There's a pattern on the inside of the box. This type of folding is also known as unit or modular origami. No scissors, glue or tape used!

Hexagonal Origami Box

A six-sided box, this design is from Origami Boxes by Tomoko Fuse. Each box requires 12 square pieces of paper, 6 for the bottom and 6 for the lid. I used 15cm x 15cm paper. Paper, washi chiyogami.

Tsuzura Origami Box

One of my favorite boxes. The design is from Origami Boxes, by Tomoko Fuse. Four square sheets of paper are required to make it, two for the top and two for the bottom. I used 15cm x 15cm chiyogami leaves, rice paper and chiyogami plum blossoms papers. The finished measurements are approximately 6cm x 6cm x 6cm. With a treat inside, this little box makes the perfect gift. This type of folding is also known as unit or modular origami. No scissors, glue or tape used!

This design is from Origami Boxes by Tomoko Fuse. Four sheets of paper are required to make each box. I used 15cm x 15cm origami paper. Below, inside of box.
