Fabulous Modular Origami Review & GIVEAWAY

I just got Tomoko Fuse's new book Fabulous Modular Origami: 20 origami models with instructions and diagrams. In modular origami multiple pieces of paper are folded and then assembled into a single unit. The Summary below lists the books 20 folding projects. All designs have a difficulty rating of 1 through 5, easy to expert. The number of modules per unit varies. The easiest models need only 2 pieces of paper while the most difficult require as many as 30. Nearly all have a recommended paper size of either 3 or 6" squares. Instructions are via large folding diagrams, complete with symbols and text. Photos by Dario Canova show the completed models from a variety of angles. The Large star from page 118 requires 30 pieces of 4" square paper.

This is the Bright star I folded from page 52. It's an ingenious and satisfying fold! No cutting is involved. The design has a difficulty rating of 3 out of 5. Five pieces of 3" square paper are required to make it. All five units are folded identically and then assembled into a single unit. Assembly is not difficult. While glue isn't necessary, I used it to make my star more durable. It measures approximately 4 1/2" across when complete. I love it!

Origami Dove Tutorial

This is an easy to make, 3d origami dove. I folded it with an 8 1/4" square, the result a 6 3/4" long dove. It makes a pretty Christmas tree ornament, simply hole punch and add ribbon, an ornament hook, craft wire or string. In between the front and back wings there is a tab where you can hide the hole punch. Diagram instructions are available at Romi's Origami. I discovered a few variations entirely by mistake.

Zen Origami Kit Review & Giveaway

Zen Origami: 20 Modular Forms for Meditation and Calm by Maria Sinayskaya – Paperback released April 15, 2016 from Race Point Publishing. Kit includes a 128 page book and whopping 400 sheets of origami paper. Modular origami is the technique of folding 2 or more pieces of paper identically and then assembling them into a single unit. I start with the first project a Square Coaster requiring 4 sheets of paper to make. It's a design I haven't come across before and I find it both attractive and practical. I move on to the Giant Star (8 sheets) and Two-Faced Flower (6 sheets) with striking results. Having successfully completed the 3 warm-up designs my confidence has grown and I'm ready to tackle my first Fasett Sonobe. I begin with the 6-unit cube assembly and am delighted to be able to fold it. I am enjoying this book, the instructions are very clear and the designs sound. I like the paper too. There are 400 sheets measuring 3" x 3", mostly patterns with solid color reverses, all have matte finishes. It's nice to see some new patterns. A terrific modular origami kit.  Get your copy below!

Origami Wreath

This well designed wreath is from Amazing Origami, Traditional Japanese Folding Papers and Projects by Michael G. LaFosse. Eight 3" squares are folded together to create this striking modular wreath 5 1/2" in diameter. The kit includes a full-color 64-page book with step-by-step folding instructions for 17 interesting origami models. Ten of the designs are by Michael G. LaFosse, one is by Gay Merrill Gross and six are traditional. Origami Christmas Tree Ornament Tutorial

This Christmas tree ornament is a traditional origami design. Each ornament requires 2 square pieces of paper to make, followed by several easy folds. I used 15cm x 15cm origami paper with two coordinating green patterns, the result a paper ornament 10.5cm in length. Red ribbon to embellish. No scissors, glue or tape used! Tutorial below.

I found this delightful design in The Christmas Origami Kit by Anne Marie Harris. It comes with instructions for six traditional origami designs and twenty four sheets of 5.25" origami paper. The trees can be made in any size by using a smaller or larger square sheet of paper. A 5.25" square folds into a 2.5" tree. I'm using them as holiday ornaments, gift tags and place cards. Make your own with the simple tutorial below. No scissors or tape, a little glue is handy.

Tutorial: Origami Tree

Origami Teardrop Ornament

This gorgeous teardrop ornament designed by Rae Cooker may be found in New Ideas For Paperfolding by Gay Merrill Gross. I made it with one square sheet of 15cm handmade Japanese paper, a clip, and a red ribbon. The result, a handmade paper Christmas tree ornament 8cm in length.

The clever design is easy to fold. The chiyogami paper has a crane pattern. No scissors, glue or tape used! 

Origami Bird Ornament

This beautiful origami bird makes the perfect Christmas tree ornament. I just love it! I made it with one square sheet of 15cm handmade Japanese paper, a clip, and a red ribbon.


The design is from The Origami Giftbox by Nick Robinson. I slightly modified the original design called First Flight by leaving out extra folds in the beak and not curling the wings. The graceful design is simple to fold. No scissors, glue or tape used!

Origami Star Wreath

A few quick folds and you get these pretty star wreaths. The design by Courtney Spooner Clark is from Minigami by Gay Merrill Gross. Each wreath requires 8 square pieces of paper. I used 6 x 6cm mini washi origami paper which results in wreaths just over 10cm. The wreaths are reversible. The red ribbon is for tying the wreaths to the tree, they make beautiful ornaments! No scissors, glue or tape used!
