Let's Make Some Great Art: Animals Review & GIVEAWAY

Have kids? This is Let's Make Some Great Art: Animals by Marion Deuchars. Her wonderful book features a selection of art activities designed to engage beginning artists. They include things like drawing, painting, finger and hand print art. The activities focus on creating a wide range of animals, from popular pets to wild animals and more. Space is reserved inside this (over-sized) workbook to complete nearly all of the activities. Many can be expanded upon outside of this book. Minimally you'll need some basic art supplies - something to draw with, some paint, tape and a pair of scissors. Or use all your favorite art supplies. Text is minimal. Examples of each activity show clearly what to do. Use these charming examples to spark creativity. Prompts lead the way - gently encouraging action. There is a new art technique every page or two. The emphasis is on having fun. Perfection is rejected. The activities are designed to build kids confidence in their ability to make art. This British illustrators "Let’s Make Some Great Art" 4 book series (shown at bottom of this post) has won numerous awards and been translated into 22 languages. I can see why. There is something very special about this book. See excerpts below. Laurence King Publishing released this 80 page paperback on September 8, 2020. Get your copy below!

Origami on the Go! Review

Fold away the hours! This is Origami on the Go: 40 paper-folding projects for kids who love to travel by Margaret Van Sicklen. It's an origami adventure that takes young travelers around the world. It comes complete with one hundred sheets of glossy folding paper and three pages of stickers. The forty travel-inspired projects will appeal to a variety of tastes. There are all kinds of clever designs. A few of my favorites are the practical Knick-knack and Gift Boxes, the delightful Iowa Piggy and the Russian Crow with its impressive, movable beak. There's even a t-shirt fold. This is well-diagrammed origami - the folding instructions are excellent. Models vary in difficulty from beginner through intermediate. Each model has its own specially designed paper. And there are extra sheets for practice folding. All paper squares measure a generous 7" x 7" (17.86 cm) and come in an array of colorful patterns and solids. The tear out style paper keeps things neat and tidy. Simply crease along the perforated line then tear out as needed. The stickers are for adding features like eyes or decorative details. Everything is clearly marked. Kids love origami. It's a wonderful way to engage their minds, hands and hearts. Plus their patience is rewarded with a handmade paper creation to play with. This kit is perfect for hours of screen-free fun and learning, on-the-go or at home! See excerpts and the complete table of contents below. Workman Publishing released this 144 page paperback ‏on September 3, 2009. Get your copy below!

Little Creative Thinker's Exercise Book Review & GIVEAWAY

Can creativity be learned? Yes, says Danish creativity expert Dorte Nielsen. Designed especially for children, the Little Creative Thinker's Exercise Book is a spin-off of the Creative Thinker's Exercise Book. It's based on the ideas presented in The Secret of the Highly Creative Thinker also by Nielsen. She theorizes that at the core of creative thinking is the ability to see or make connections. And that you can improve this ability by training it. Her book features 40 practical exercises designed to strengthen children's connection making skills. Kids can complete them on their own. Just add pencil or pen. Begin by looking carefully at the page. Follow the kid-friendly (diagram or text) instructions. Complete the exercise by drawing your answers in the space provided. A clear example is given. The activities, challenges and exercises may be done in about 10 - 30 mins each. It's a wonderful way to nurture creative thinking in children. They'll just think it's fun. I had to try the exercises. Though it's intended for kids - I loved it. I completed the 3 exercises shown below. Whose creativity would you like to encourage?
